A Pink Botanical Bedroom With a Plum-Painted Fireplace

The brief was glamorous and bold, but also pretty and a little sweet. And it had to last: a room that feels magical now and still works when she’s older.

Pink everywhere

A dusty-pink chinoiserie of flowering branches and birds covers every wall. Instead of one feature wall, the pattern wraps the room, so it feels like stepping inside a painting. Soft Roman Clay on the ceiling keeps it from going sugary.

Pretty, but never too precious to live in.

The fireplace that grounds it

The existing mantel is painted Poe, a deep plum. Against all that pink, it gives the room weight and makes it feel grown-up. Above it hangs Venetian Light, an abstract oil by Olena Kishkurno in soft greens and creams that answers the wallpaper without copying it.

Glamour in the lighting

A chandelier with a ring of white globes set in brass hangs overhead, and small white sconces flank the fireplace. They’re the most grown-up things in the room, and the reason it doesn’t read as a little girl’s room.

Built to grow with her

The pieces that carry the room’s character are the paper, the plum mantel, the lighting and the bed, and they’re meant to stay. The things on the mantel and the books by the bed can change as she does. It’s hers now, and it will still be hers later.
