KITCHENS / THE WORKING PANTRY

The Deep-Green Pantry That Works Like a Second Kitchen

We built a deep-green pantry that works like a second kitchen, with Breccia Pernice marble, hidden storage for the unglamorous things and a water station for the dog.

The best detail in this pantry is at ankle height: a small water tap built into the base of the cabinets, so filling the dog’s bowl doesn’t mean carrying it across the kitchen. That’s the kind of room this is. It was designed around the chores, not the photographs.

A home for the unglamorous

A tall cupboard hides brooms, mops and the vacuum, with outlets inside so everything charges out of sight. Slots keep baking sheets upright. The coffee machine and dishwasher are built in, a second sink handles prep, and a separate tap pours filtered water. The main kitchen stays clear for cooking and company.

The aim wasn’t to hide the work of a kitchen. It was to give that work a beautiful room.

A serious marble for a supporting room

Then we did something a little extravagant: Breccia Pernice on the counters, a marble that looks like a collage of cream, rose, terracotta and olive. It would hold its own in a dining room. Here it makes a prep counter worth looking at.

Glossy green

The cabinetry is Farrow & Ball’s Bancha, an earthy olive, in a higher-gloss finish so the inset doors catch the light. Brass knobs warm it up, two ribbed mirrored-glass pendants hang overhead, and a small pink mosaic underfoot picks up the warm tones in the stone.

When function is the design

Two windows at the end look out to the garden, so even the hardest-working room in the house gets daylight. Nobody is asked to admire a broom cupboard here. The luxury is that everything ordinary already has a place.
