A Garden-Level Kitchen Gives a Brownstone a New Heart

The old kitchen was built for service, not for a family: stainless counters, a long professional cooking wall and an island that worked like a prep station. You could cook a great deal in it. Nobody wanted to sit there.

We kept the ambition and changed the purpose.

Fifteen feet of marble

The island is the whole idea. It’s fifteen feet of Calacatta Viola, with stools wrapping around the end so eight people face each other instead of the cook. It’s where homework gets spread out, where friends land after school and where dinner sometimes just happens. We set the slab on a dark walnut base with turned legs so it reads as a table, not a block.

It isn’t fifteen feet for spectacle. It’s fifteen feet so everyone gets a seat.

Stone, cream and brass

Behind the island, the cabinetry went quiet: inset doors in a warm cream, unlacquered brass pulls and walls in Roman Clay. The same Calacatta Viola climbs the wall behind the range and finishes in a slim marble shelf. A sixty-inch Wolf still anchors the cooking wall. It just isn’t the point anymore.

One floor, two rooms

Past the island, a sofa and two green lounge chairs make a proper sitting room, joined to the kitchen by the same pale oak floor. Someone can cook, someone can put on a movie, and nobody has to leave the room to be part of the evening.

An ordinary evening

The garden doors are a few steps away, so the floor moves easily from stool to sofa to outside. The range is serious and the storage is generous, but the measure of this kitchen is simpler: no one has to be asked twice to pull up a stool.
